Rolex Model Numbers (Reference Numbers)
It is imperative to know the model number of the Rolex Watch you plan to purchase before actually buying the watch. The reason for this is because not all dealers are honest on their description. Some of them misrepresent the watches making an older watch look a newer style by customizing and not disclosing it on the description. Therefore it is important to look in the description for the model number. If the model number is not in the description then it is usually not a good sign. The model number is located at twelve ‘clock on the case between the lugs with the exception of the Oysterquartz which is located on the lugs. With the chart below you may be able to recognize the models of the most popular Rolex Watches:

I forgot to specify the model number: 6917
February 26th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Hi, Astrid.
This is not related to the watch being authentic or not. You’ll even find vintage rolex watches that the model numbers have disappeared with time.
The model you gave us is a vintage ladies watch. If you tell us the first three numbers of the serial number and the number of digits in the serial, we can tell you the year of the watch (please do not give anyone the whole serial number)
February 28th, 2010 at 7:35 PM
i have a rolex oyster 2574.
first thre numbers of the serial number are 122
my father had it for years I have been trying to find out how old it is can you tell me the age please
March 1st, 2010 at 1:33 PM
Hi Chris,
Within the information that you have given us, Ref. 2574, Serial number starting with 122XXX, the watch is a vintage manual winding from 1938. In other words you have a great inheritance.

i have my grandmother’s ladies oyster Perpetual datejust 69173, i have been trying to determine if it is real or not. i have been to soo many websities mostly all the same information and most of has came out that it is real. i know it’s before 2002 and i am trying to locate the serial number that is supposed to between the lugs. is that number on both ends? please help as i dont have a dealer anywhere near me..
March 2nd, 2010 at 2:51 PM
69173 it is a Rolex Datejust Two-Tone Ladies watch. The serial number can be located at 6 o’clock on the case between the lugs like showing in this link:
http://blog.messinajewelers.com/rolex-serial-numbers/
It’s usually 6/7 numbers or a letter followed by 6 numbers. Please do not give anyone the whole serial number.
March 4th, 2010 at 1:17 PM
I have a Rolex Model Ref: 6098. Serial No. starting at 228xx.
What year would it be?
Luis
March 4th, 2010 at 3:56 PM
With the model number 6098 it seems that the serial number has 6 digits, and that makes your watch a 1955 Explorer. One of the first of it’s kind.
March 9th, 2010 at 6:50 AM
I have a Rolex Oyster which was left to me by my dad. It has the numbers 84897 and 2081 on the back of the watch. Is it old
March 9th, 2010 at 3:31 PM
Hi wendy,
That’s a real vintage watch you’ve got. This watch is from around 1936.

March 12th, 2010 at 7:05 PM
Hi!! I have a Rolex model number 2136 (this is the only number I see on the watch)..the front says “ROLEX” Geneve Quartz. How old is this? THanks!!
March 15th, 2010 at 11:31 AM
Hi Jim the numbers you have given us are from the bracelet. 8570F is a presidential bracelet. You need to give us the numbers between the lugs at 12 o’clock like shown on the second picture. Thanks
March 15th, 2010 at 11:35 AM
Hi Lynette 2136 is a vintage Rolex, Oyster Manual Winding model. I am sorry to say this but if it says Quartz then it is most certainly a fake watch. The only model Quartz made by Rolex was the Oysterquartz model which came many years later.

can you kindly tell me which year this watch was made,??
thanks
April 12th, 2010 at 5:30 PM
Hi we would need the first three digits of the serial number
May 8th, 2010 at 7:57 PM
I have a ladies oyster perpetual no date, stainless steel rolex. Between the lugs one end has 6178 and the other has 5866XXX. However they are not engraved extremely finely like I’m seeing in the photographs. In addition, there is no other engraving above either number such as “orig rolex design.” The back of the case is engraved “Stainless Steel” and “Registered Design.” Do you think it is authentic and if so approximately how old?
Thanks
May 8th, 2010 at 7:58 PM
sorry it is 6718 not 6178…
thanks
May 10th, 2010 at 2:13 PM
Hi, John.
According to the serial number you gave us, the watch is from 1978. It’s really difficult to know if a watch is authentic or not without seeing at least one picture of it. You may send us pictures of the watch (send it to sales@messinajewelers.com), if you would like to, and we’ll be happy to try and help you out on this issue.

Hi Cesar,
I have a Rolex GMT Master that I acquired in Vietnam in 1968 (late) or (early) 1969. I purchased it from a Special Forces SFC. He was buying a gold President model and needed the money. I had it rebuilt by Rolex USA in 2000. It has a reference # of X 166695 and a serial number 142XXXX. Can you help dating this watch?
Thank you.
Dennis Hively
July 9th, 2010 at 4:53 PM
Hi Dennis,
The model number doesn’t match with a GMT Master one, but according to the serial number your watch is from 1960.
Regards.
July 26th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Hi,
I am not familiar with rolex watches. I have one that says Rolex Oyster Perpetual at the top of the dial and swiss made at the very bottom. Underneath the snap part of the band it says Rolex 8570F, Geneve,750,Swiss made, 18K. Because I don’t see a model number where you say there should be one, Does that mean this is a replica? I have not been able to find any pictures that look exactly like it. It is similar to a picture of a replica of a Datejust skeleton automatic but not exactly the same.
Ashley
July 26th, 2010 at 6:10 PM
hi,
can you please tell me which year is 5312448 from?
Thank you!
July 27th, 2010 at 1:27 PM
Hi Ashley,
On older rolex models, the end piece of the bracelet used to touch the area where the model number/serial number is, scratching and sometimes removing those numbers. This doesn’t mean you rolex is a replica.
Best regards,
Cesar.
July 27th, 2010 at 1:34 PM
Hi Ellie,
It’s from around 1977.

Hello Cesar!
I have inherited my Father’s Rolex, and would like to find out the year it was produced. After reading about this particular model, I was amazed to find out about 25,000 were produced in 25 years!

Hi Caesar,
I have what seems to be a 14k or 18k gold rolex 5050, serial 652xxx. Can you tell me what year this is from, and is it authentic? I guess it’s late 1940′s.
Thanks!
Henry
August 30th, 2010 at 12:08 PM
Hi Henry,
In 1954 Rolex decided to reset the serial numbers, so a 5050 bubbleback with this serial number may have been made in 1949 or in 1957. It’s really hard to say if it’s authentic without having the watch in hands.
Regards.

I recently inherited a rolex from my Dad & am curious about it’s value. It is an Oysterquartz Datejust purchased in 1982. It is a 14 or 18 ct. gold # 17013. All the model/serial numbers match the documentation that I have.
It is a 2-tone band with little wear. I have the original documentation with the official sticker, etc.
I realize you cannot give a full appraisal without seeing it,
but could you give me a ballpark figure?
Thank you so much,
Sue Ann

I have a watch that says Rolex. On the back the numbers are 4112 at the twelve o clock pos. and a seven letter and number combo of X643— what do I have here? Is it real and what model is it if so? Thank you sooooo much this has been extremely difficult to figure out.
September 24th, 2010 at 3:03 PM
Hi,
For what we see It seems that it’s a Men’s Rolex Cellini from 1991. We can’t really say if it’s real of not without having the watch in our hands.
Regards.
September 24th, 2010 at 3:09 PM
Hi Sue,
The price range for this watch is usually from $2500 to $2800 depending on the manufacturing year and wear.

September 29th, 2010 at 10:35 AM
Hello, maybe a silly question..but how do you remove the wristband to find the numbers? I’m so afraid to do something to damage the watch.
thanks.

Hi Shannon,
It’s not a silly question, so we decided to create a post on the blog to answer your question. You may follow the link below.

Hi,
According to the serial number and the model, this watch seems to be from around 1949. About the other information, it is really difficult to tell the price of the watch and if it’s genuine or not without having it in our hands.
Regards.

Sorry but it is hard to say if it is original or not without looking at the timepiece. Please send us pictures of the watch if you can including the reference number. It should be located between the lugs at 12 o’clock between the lugs.
December 1st, 2010 at 12:40 PM
Hi Mike please send us pictures of the watch to sales@messinajewelers.com , including pictures of where the reference number should be located ( 12 o’clock between lugs)
January 6th, 2011 at 4:17 AM
I Have a Rolex Daytona Oyster Perpetual with engraving on the back cover ROLEX WINNER ad daytona 1992
serial numbers 455 @12 o`clock back of strap 78488
Is this watch genuine with the given information
Michael
January 6th, 2011 at 11:09 AM
Hi Michael it is hard to determine if a watch is original without seeing it. The serial number should be located at 6 o’clock between the lugs , at 12 you should be seeing the model number . You need to remove the band to see it.

Oscar

I have a ROLEX watch that was from my father, dead since 1980, it has written REGISTERED DESIGN
6549 on twelve o’clock position
and just the NUMBER 1496 _ _ _ (seven positions) on six o’clock position
Both of them between the lugs.
The Back is clear, nothing written in it
Could you say the date that it was made, and if it could not be original with just those informations?
January 25th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Hi,
It’s really difficult to tell if a watch is original without having it in our hands, but according to the information given this watch is from around 1961.
Regards.

Hi
I have inherited a Rolex Model No 6664 Ser No 605xxx 18k 35 diamond fixed bezel cellini watch. Could you tell me the year it was made?
March 31st, 2011 at 12:24 PM
It’s circa 1949. It could be worth aroung $2500. It is a Bubbleback model.
March 31st, 2011 at 12:29 PM
with the serial number provided it must be from 1948.
April 21st, 2011 at 10:51 PM
Some help please….Was looking at a buddy’s 18k 16758 nipple dial GMT and didnt see “registered design” over the model # or any other wording. The 16758 is in correct position and appears to be correct. It is a 6 million serial #(1980). Did they leave that out on some of the transitional models like this one? Everything looks legit but I don’t see where it would’ve been even under a loop….
Thanks
April 25th, 2011 at 11:49 AM
Some models did not come with “Registered Design” , that is not an indication that the watch is not original.
May 9th, 2011 at 12:48 AM
I have a rolex oyster perpetual 100m-330ft submariner 5508 registered design 361167 just moved house found watch in draw must of had it for at least 30 years could you tell its age and its value david
May 10th, 2011 at 2:39 PM
Hi the watch should be around 1945. It is hard to determine value without seeing the watch. If the face is original and everything is original it could be worth from $10,000 to $12,000. If the face is not original then from $4,000 to $5,000.
Best Regards,

I am unable to find any record on my Rolex model 5015, Serial Number:683504. Can you give some info on its date of production and its current value? Thank you.
May 27th, 2011 at 12:34 PM
It’s a bubble back from 1957.
May 27th, 2011 at 12:36 PM
It is hard to dictate price without having the watch, without seeing the watch.
June 6th, 2011 at 12:29 PM
i have a rolex oyster perpetual date with the number 16520on its link is it official?
June 7th, 2011 at 11:15 AM
It should say 16520 between the lugs on the case.
June 15th, 2011 at 2:45 AM
I have a datejust with engraved serial number “stainless steel” 3235118 and “registered design” number 1603. These were found at the 6 and 12 marking, respectively, between the lugs. Could you tell me the year of this watch? The watched makes a winding noise when I shake it. This got me worried since most blogs are saying that it should be fairly quiet. Should I be worried about the authenticity when it comes to the engraving and noise?
June 15th, 2011 at 4:29 PM
The watch is from 1971. The watch making a noise is not related with the watch not being authentic . It could be the automatic wheel, a broken screw many things
June 29th, 2011 at 11:19 AM
I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust with the blue background,it had dimonds for the number. I took the band off both sides and cound not find the number is this real or fake?
superlative chronometer
officially certified
On the very bottom it says swiss made
then on the back it had a sticker green with the numbers 69173
on the underside of the band it says:
Rolex
8570F
Geneve 750
swiss made 18k
Thanks,
Yolanda
July 5th, 2011 at 12:31 PM
69173 should be a rolex two tone sapphire crystal ladies watch. It would not be possible to know if a watch is real or not without having the watch in our hands.
July 5th, 2011 at 3:54 PM
I inherited a vintage ladies Rolex 14k gold dress watch with a gold woven band. The watch is stamped Montres 1400 on the inside and has a 17 jewel movement. An appraisal from 1995 states the model number is 327170. Is there any other information you can give me…such as production date, etc?
Thank you.

Hi I have a watch no band it says rolex oyster quartz day-date and at the bottom superlative chronometer officially certified it looks all gold except the back witch is blank and has diamonds at 5 10 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 hands the diamonds on the 30 and 45 minute hands are long the rest round but it has no serial #’s on it any were
July 9th, 2011 at 1:19 AM
Is it real
July 9th, 2011 at 1:54 AM
It doesn’t have diamonds at 15min or 12 o’clock if that helps
July 14th, 2011 at 12:57 PM
Considering the caliber number you gave us the watch is from around the 1960s
July 14th, 2011 at 12:59 PM
We are unable to determine whether a watch is fake or not without physically having the watch in our hands. Even though the watch has no serial number, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is fake, the numbers could have faded etc.
August 1st, 2011 at 7:51 PM
My dad’s Oyster Perpetual, SS, has the number 57 in 2 places on the back of the watch, one on the upper corner, stem side and the other is diagonal to that one. I know it is an older model as the jeweler commented on the way the band attached. I’m afraid to take the band off myself to look for SN. Can you give me an estimate of age & value?
August 3rd, 2011 at 4:10 PM
It is hard to dictate price without having the watch in our hands.
August 8th, 2011 at 1:17 PM
I have a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Air King that I received as a Safety Award back in 1980. The serial number apears to match the date 5,40x,xxx and the model 5500 apears to match the design. the watch currently does not work and was wondering if it was worth getting repaired. Would like your thoughts.
August 10th, 2011 at 9:36 AM
I have an Oyster Perpetual Lady Date with a blue dial and 69 16 stamped on one end and a 7 digit serial number beginning with 553 on the other. The band was replaced with an off brand Jubilee style. How much does not having the original band effect the value? What year is my watch from? Thanks, Mike
August 17th, 2011 at 12:38 PM
I was looking at buying a gold Day Date here locally. The seller says the Model # is 1807 and the first 3 of the Serial # is 271XXXX. Can you tell me how old it is and if it would be worth the asking price of $6900? The seller says it’s authentic but has no paperwork or box to go with the watch. Thanks!
August 17th, 2011 at 2:31 PM
My husband and I have an old Oyster Perpetual Datejust #6605 with no band. Is it worth anything?
August 18th, 2011 at 12:26 PM
We can not dictate a price without having it in our hands. It is from 1943
August 18th, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Yes, it still has value without the band
August 18th, 2011 at 12:41 PM
Yes, it does lose its value, but not by much. From the serial number your watch is from 1978.
August 21st, 2011 at 12:05 PM
My father left me a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Chronometer, Officially Certified, T SWISS T, Ref# 6084, serial # 844XXX.
The watch is not running at this time. Is it cost effective to get it repaired.
Thanks
Rick

Hi I would like to know the year and approximate value of a rolex oyster perpetual #6569 and serial 341***. If I had to sell this watch what is the best option?
September 13th, 2011 at 11:32 PM
I just buy a Rolex Lady Dayjust Ref 69175. I could not find that model in your above list, can you explain? is it now real?
September 14th, 2011 at 11:30 AM
No, it does not mean it is fake. It could just mean we didn’t include all models.
September 14th, 2011 at 11:31 AM
it is from 1971, the value of the watch depends on the condition of the watch.
September 14th, 2011 at 11:32 AM
In order to determine if its real or not we will need to have the watch physically in our hands.
September 16th, 2011 at 3:02 PM
Hi I would like to know the year and approximate value of a rolex oyster perpetual datejust 68273 and serial U821***.
September 16th, 2011 at 5:25 PM
Hi,
I picked up a ‘rolex’ at auction the other day.the jeweler says its a fake. something about a magnet not sticking to it?
it is a ladies rolex oyster (tealish in color) perpetual with two circular openings on the face where you can see the inner workings in gold. The back is glass and you can see the inner workings as well. Around the opening i t says Waterproof automatic stainless steel back swiss made. I can see no markings anywhere except on the band. It says Geneve Rolex 750 swiss made, 18K gold. The silver around the band seems tarnished – making me think he was right. If it is not real, what is the value? it is a pretty enough watch. Jeweler thought maybe 150$?

In an an Oyster Perpetual Datejust made about 1987 (988XXXX, Case Reference 16030), the number 16000 is stamped on the inside of the caseback. Should it match the case reference number?
September 26th, 2011 at 2:55 PM

October 29th, 2011 at 4:34 PM
What is the value of a Rolex Oster Perpetual Datejust Superlative chromometer officially certified with the word Swiss just below the 6. Can’t not read the model or serial numbers. Year and original value if possible. Thanks
November 22nd, 2011 at 10:09 PM
Did ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUALS EVER USE BATTERIES?
i am like 95% sure they never did but i would like to know for sure.
AND DOES THE NUMBER ‘Y481 168899′ sound genuine?
November 27th, 2011 at 9:53 PM
My father in law has a watch. It says that it is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.
When I removed the band it read “Registered Design 1601″
It has a red face with diamonds or crystals around the rim of the face. It is a beautiful watch with smooth edges and the water beads up on it. I checked for markings and it has the markings on the clasp and between the bolts under the bracelet. Could you tell me, how to make sure it is a real? And if you might know how to tell when it was made?
December 1st, 2011 at 11:54 AM
Hi we would need to have the watch in our hands to give a complete appraisal. The face must be custom but it is normal to have a refinished face wtih a vintage watch. There is an article in our blog that discusses how to date a watch .
December 1st, 2011 at 11:57 AM
Oyster Perpetual never used batteries. Only Oysterquartz . letter Y is 2002-2003 however the digits do not match you have an extra digit on serial number .
December 8th, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Sorry cannot appraise watches without having them at hand.

Hi I am thinking of buying this old Ladies Oyster Perpetual Rolex tiffany & co. Gold and stainless from Ebay she got this stuff from a local estate, anyway in the photo there is a number 491 do they have only 3 numbers?
December 11th, 2011 at 10:01 PM
I have a ladies 18k gold ladies oyster perpetual date with diamonds on the face. On the band I can find the number 8570 with no F. Can you tell me anything about this.
December 18th, 2011 at 8:28 AM
Hi,
I am not familiar with rolex watches. I have one that says Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date at the top of the dial , superlative chronometer officially certified , and swiss made at the very bottom. Underneath the snap part of the band it says Rolex, Geneve,750,Swiss made, 18K.Alaso these numbers 16233(not hollogram) and on the strap 18956.I don’t see a model number where you say there should be one, Does that mean this is a replica? I have not been able to find any pictures that look exactly like it. It is similar to a picture of a replica of a Datejust skeleton automatic but not exactly the same.
December 19th, 2011 at 12:52 PM
Hi it is hard to evaluate without having the watch in our hands. If you could send us a picture then it would help. However some things do not match. 16233 should be a two tone datejust and not a day-date . You could send us a picture to sales@messinajewelers.com .
December 19th, 2011 at 1:29 PM
Hi can you send me the link of the listing .
